2. Read the text. Then choose the correct answer for each question below. Suppose your teacher gave you an assignment to add all of the numbers from 1 to 100 without using a calculator. How long do you think it would take? You could do it in about 30 seconds. Here’s how: Add 1 plus 100, which equals 101. Add 2 plus 99, which equals 101. Add 3 plus 98, which also equals 101. You re adding 50 pairs of numbers, which all equal 101. Therefore, you can multiply 50 times 101. This equals 5,050. Multiplication, of course, is simply a fast method of addition when you use the same numbers. The mathematician who worked out this particular problem was named Carl Gauss. He lived from 1777 to 1855. As a college student, he discovered that a seventeen-sided figure could be drawn with just a compass and a ruler. This was thought to be impossible. During his lifetime, Gauss made many discoveries in the study of numbers and shapes. He studied the use of statistics. This is the science of collecting, using, and studying information from real events in life. Gauss also studied stars and planets. He became famous for discovering the orbit around the sun of the asteroid Ceres. See if you can add all the numbers from 1 to 100 in less than 30 seconds! Maybe you, too, will become a scientist or math expert! . Which word in the passage refers to “the study and use of numbers”?

8. Read the text and answer the questions according to it. Spices were known to Eastern peoples thousands of years ago.Arab traders skilfully kept a secret the true source of these spices. Spices became valuable items of sale early in the evolution of the spice trade and were introduced by Arab traders to the West. The initial uses of spices in very early times were in medicine and in the making of holy oils. People believed in the cure of spices, in a powder form, in the Middle Ages and even brought them into early medicine. It is not known when spices were first used in food. Certainly, the ancient Greeks and Romans used spices to flavour food and drinks because they discovered that spices helped to preserve foods, hid the flavour of spoiled meat in part, and also brought a change of flavour. Knowledge of the use of spices to preserve and flavour food slowly spread through Europe. Finally, in the last third of the 15th century, the Europeans decided to build ships and dared to go abroad in search of a route to the spice-producing countries. According to the passage, all statements are TRUE, EXCEPT . . . .

9. Read the text and answer the questions below. The polar bear makes its home in the cold and icy Arctic. Other animals might freeze or starve. But the polar bear knows how to live in the snow.
Polar bears have thick blubber, or fat, that protects them from the cold. They also have a thick fur coat. The polar bear’s coat is white. This allows it to blend into the snow. That way, the polar bear can sneak up on its prey. Polar bears swim well.
They eat seals, walruses, small whales, and rodents. In the summer, they may eat berries.
Polar bears will also eat people. They may look cute and furry, but be careful of this big bear! Which of the following do polar bears not eat?

Naturalized citizens are not born in the United States or its territories. They become citizens by fulfilling certain requirements. A requirement is something needed. What are some requirements to become a naturalized citizen?
One must be at least 18 years old. One must have good moral character. If one is moral, one is good.
One does not commit crimes or hurt others. One must have lived in the United States for at least five years. One must pass two tests. One test is an English test. The other is a civics test. The civics test is on American history and government.

Which president is called “the father of our country”? How many senators are in Congress? What is the capital of your state? Where is the White House located? What do the stars on our flag mean?
These five questions are from a list of 96 questions. The list is for the civics test. People can use the list to study for the test. The test they take will not have all 96 questions. The test will only have some of the 96 questions.
What are the answers to the sample questions? The first answer is George Washington. He is the “father of our country.” The second answer is 100. We have 50 states. We have two senators from each state. This means we have 100 senators. There are 50 answers to the third question! Each state has a different capital. Reptiles have been around for millions of years and once were the most common vertebrate animals
on Earth. Today, reptiles are divided into four main groups: turtles and tortoises; lizards and snakes; crocodiles and alligators; and the tuatara. A tuatara looks like a lizard, but it isn’t. It’s a species left over from a group of reptiles as old as dinosaurs. It is the closest thing to a living dinosaur. Tuataras live only in New Zealand and are in danger of becoming extinct.
Some reptiles spend most of their time in water. But most species live on land. All have scaly skin to protect them. Reptiles are found in all habitats except polar ice in the Arctic and the tundra.
Reptiles usually lay their eggs in nests or holes dug in the ground. But some snakes, like rattlesnakes, let the eggs hatch inside the body and give birth to live babies. Female crocodiles are very good mothers. They guard the nest and even help the hatchlings get a start in life. Some snakes do this, too. But most reptiles lay their eggs and leave. The hatchlings, which are perfect miniature copies of their parents, are on their own.

One can find reptiles everywhere Except . . . .

With wings that can stretch to almost three metres long, the California condor is the largest flying
bird found in America. The huge condor is mostly black with big white wing patterns. It has no feathers on its head. It is a scavenger, which means it eats dead animals. Unlike its close relative, the vulture, which is rare, the California condor finds food by sight rather than by smell. The California condor is also an endangered bird. This means it is rare and needs help to survive. These birds became rare because the dead animals they feed on often contain lead, a kind of metal, which is dangerous for the birds. Today, there are only about 230 California condors left in the wild. Scientists are working hard to make sure these birds survive.

16. Read the passage below and answer the questions  Frieda the Fox was one of the young foxes learning how to hunt. She would practice her skills every day.
She wanted to be one of the best, but she still had a lot to learn. Her dad took her out one day, and Frieda found a mouse to chase. She chased the mouse and almost caught it, until she saw a rabbit hop by. She stopped chasing the mouse and began chasing the rabbit. “Silly Frieda. Why did you do that?” asked her dad. “Dad! A rabbit would have been a bigger and better catch.” Her dad just shook his head. The next day they went hunting again. Frieda did the same thing except this time she stopped chasing a rabbit to chase a chicken. She came home with neither. When they got back, all of Frieda’s brothers and sisters had a catch. Frieda sat by herself in the back and pouted. She almost had the chicken and the rabbit, but instead she came home with neither. The next day, Frieda went hunting alone.
This time she decided that she would catch whatever animal she saw first. There would be no switching gears to go after another animal. It wasn’t long before she saw a hen strutting by. She decided this was it. She raced after the hen and made her pounce. It worked! She got the hen. She proudly walked home to show her dad. He was thrilled, telling Frieda, “Yeah! You finally got it!”

What lesson did Frieda finally “get?”

17. Do you have a baby at your house? Does he or she wear diapers? Can you throw them away?
In 1950, a mother named Marion had an idea. She did not like the diapers that were made out of cloth. They were too much work. They smelled bad. It took too much time to clean them. She wanted to make something better. Marion went to work. She tried making them out of many kinds of things. Marion made them out of plastic. She tried to sell the idea. No one said it would work. They said it would flop. They did not want to try her idea. Marion was sure it would work. She sold them all by herself. Mothers loved her idea. Marion made moms all over the world happy. They had more time for their babies. They had less mess to clean up. They did not have to wash diapers or let them dry. All they needed was a trashcan. She was sure her idea was going to work. She was right!

There are many different kinds of sports in the world. Some people do sports for their career and other people do sports for pleasure. Some people use public playing fields to play sport for free, while other sports such as squash, tennis, badminton and table tennis are usually paid an hourly basis. The games are often controlled by individuals known as umpires in cricket and referees in sports like football and rugby. Most sports usually last not more than a few hours. However, a game of cricket can last five days before a winner is announced. Some people prefer to watch sport games on TV. Some sports, such as football and cricket, are really popular in the UK but not in the USA. People often play basketball and baseball in the USA.
