1. Read the text. Then choose the correct answer for each question below. Suppose your teacher gave you an assignment to add all of the numbers from 1 to 100 without using a calculator. How long do you think it would take? You could do it in about 30 seconds. Here’s how: Add 1 plus 100, which equals 101. Add 2 plus 99, which equals 101. Add 3 plus 98, which also equals 101. You re adding 50 pairs of numbers, which all equal 101. Therefore, you can multiply 50 times 101. This equals 5,050. Multiplication, of course, is simply a fast method of addition when you use the same numbers. The mathematician who worked out this particular problem was named Carl Gauss. He lived from 1777 to 1855. As a college student, he discovered that a seventeen-sided figure could be drawn with just a compass and a ruler. This was thought to be impossible. During his lifetime, Gauss made many discoveries in the study of numbers and shapes. He studied the use of statistics. This is the science of collecting, using, and studying information from real events in life. Gauss also studied stars and planets. He became famous for discovering the orbit around the sun of the asteroid Ceres. See if you can add all the numbers from 1 to 100 in less than 30 seconds! Maybe you, too, will become a scientist or math expert! Which number would be added to 91 in the pattern described in the first paragraph?

5. The Statue of Liberty, arguably one of New York City's most iconic symbols, is a popular tourist attraction for first-time visitors to the city. This 150-foot monument was gifted to the United States from France in order to celebrate 100 years of America's independence. The statue is located on Liberty Island, and it is accessible by taking a ferry from either Battery Park in New York City or Liberty State Park in Jersey City. When Claire visited the Statue of Liberty for the first time, she instantly admired it as a symbol of freedom. Claire made sure to make reservations before her visit because only 240 people are permitted to climb the staircase to the top of the statue every day. After climbing almost 400 stairs, Claire received spectacular views of the city from the statue's crown. During her visit, Claire learned that the Statue of Liberty was not always the color that it is now. She found out that because the statue's exterior is made of copper, the statue oxidized over time, giving it the greenish appearance it has in present day. When it was first constructed, the statue was the same color as a shiny penny! After touring the Statue of Liberty, Claire spent the rest of the day in New York City visiting other important monuments and historic landmarks. Claire left New York hoping to have had the time to explore more sites, but she can't wait to return to the city in the future. From which part of the statue did Claire receive spectacular views of the city?

6. Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated predominantly in North America, and it possesses a different meaning in each of the countries where it's acknowledged. In the United States, Thanksgiving is a federal holiday (meaning all government employees and most private employees are given a day off of work), and always takes places on the Fourth Thursday in November, regardless of the date. The holiday signifies the immense progress made by pilgrims, or some of the first travelers to North America, at Plymouth Plantation circa 1621. It was at this time that the hungry and weary Pilgrims were taught (by Native Americans) how to grow and produce food on North America's unique terrain. Once they'd grown (and caught) an abundance of food, the Pilgrims were expectedly thankful, and they celebrated alongside the Native Americans who provided them with such valuable assistance. President Abraham Lincoln initiated the contemporary practice of Thanksgiving by calling for a "day of Thanksgiving" during one of his Civil War addresses. In America today, Thanksgiving remains firmly engrained in its historical roots, and is widely considered to be a day for giving thanks for good food, good times, and family. Thanksgiving dinner generally consists of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, gravy, and ample desserts. To be sure, indulging in abundance is a cornerstone of the holiday, as doing so could only be possible if one possesses abundance. Which food(s) are often prepared for Thanksgiving dinner?

Naturalized citizens are not born in the United States or its territories. They become citizens by fulfilling certain requirements. A requirement is something needed. What are some requirements to become a naturalized citizen?
One must be at least 18 years old. One must have good moral character. If one is moral, one is good.
One does not commit crimes or hurt others. One must have lived in the United States for at least five years. One must pass two tests. One test is an English test. The other is a civics test. The civics test is on American history and government.

16. Read the passage below and answer the questions  Frieda the Fox was one of the young foxes learning how to hunt. She would practice her skills every day.
She wanted to be one of the best, but she still had a lot to learn. Her dad took her out one day, and Frieda found a mouse to chase. She chased the mouse and almost caught it, until she saw a rabbit hop by. She stopped chasing the mouse and began chasing the rabbit. “Silly Frieda. Why did you do that?” asked her dad. “Dad! A rabbit would have been a bigger and better catch.” Her dad just shook his head. The next day they went hunting again. Frieda did the same thing except this time she stopped chasing a rabbit to chase a chicken. She came home with neither. When they got back, all of Frieda’s brothers and sisters had a catch. Frieda sat by herself in the back and pouted. She almost had the chicken and the rabbit, but instead she came home with neither. The next day, Frieda went hunting alone.
This time she decided that she would catch whatever animal she saw first. There would be no switching gears to go after another animal. It wasn’t long before she saw a hen strutting by. She decided this was it. She raced after the hen and made her pounce. It worked! She got the hen. She proudly walked home to show her dad. He was thrilled, telling Frieda, “Yeah! You finally got it!”

What lesson did Frieda finally “get?”

In 1950, a mother named Marion had an idea. She did not like the diapers that were made out of cloth. They were too much work. They smelled bad. It took too much time to clean them. She wanted to make something better. Marion went to work. She tried making them out of many kinds of things. Marion made them out of plastic. She tried to sell the idea. No one said it would work. They said it would flop. They did not want to try her idea. Marion was sure it would work. She sold them all by herself. Mothers loved her idea. Marion made moms all over the world happy. They had more time for their babies. They had less mess to clean up. They did not have to wash diapers or let them dry. All they needed was a trashcan. She was sure her idea was going to work. She was right!

There are many different kinds of sports in the world. Some people do sports for their career and other people do sports for pleasure. Some sports, like cricket, require using a lot of equipment, while others need very little in order to play a game successfully. Some people use public playing fields to play sport for free, while other sports such as squash, tennis, badminton and table tennis are usually paid an hourly basis. The games are often controlled by individuals known as umpires in cricket and referees in sports like football and rugby. Most sports usually last not more than a few hours. However, a game of cricket can last five days before a winner is announced. Some people prefer to watch sport games on TV. Some sports, such as football and cricket, are really popular in the UK but not in the USA. People often play basketball and baseball in the USA. However, most countries compete in world sporting events such as the Football World Cup or the Olympics, which occur every four years.
